ELECT ECLECTIC
The October Eclectic Tournament should get the vote of every member
who ever said, "I’d sure like to play that hole over again." In this
two-day event, Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6, you can. Whatever
score you get on each hole on Saturday, you get a chance to lower on
Sunday. What a great feeling when Saturday’s double bogey goes on your
card as a birdie on Sunday. Your final score is the total of your best
score on each hole for two days. This is a gross and net event open to
all members with a current USGA handicap. Anyone without one will play
at scratch. Open Division players will play from the blues. Seniors
and Super Seniors will tee it up from the whites. The entry is $20.
Use the entry blank you received with the May newsletter, get one off
our web site, ccmga.net, or pick one up from the CCMGA Information Box
in the Pro Shop. The entry deadline is September 29.
WE GAVE IT A GOOD SHOT
But just not quite enough to win this year’s Encanto Cup played on our
course on August 25. When the final scores were posted, the board
showed Ecanto the winner by just one point over our team. Maryvale was
third and Papago fourth. Our lineup included: David Bray, Ron Boothby,
Randy Coen, Robert Dale, Randy Gregory, Don Henkel, Peter Knezinskis,
Mike Larocca, Tom McConnell, Danny Schott, Dave Simmers, and
Scott Weyrauch. Jim Denmark was our non-playing captain.
Fine effort, guys. As the host, we provided a good course and good eats.

PRO TIPS
When they come for lessons, most players are looking for consistency
in their games. One error I constantly see in my students is their
inability to square up to the shot with a consistent club position.
The method I have found that best promotes consistency is to simply
place the club in the center of your stance and look down the shaft.
You will see that the club face and ball are now properly aligned.
Because most irons are offset (the leading edge of the club is behind
the center of the shaft), the ball will be further back in your
stance with irons than with woods that have face progression (the
face is forward of the center of the shaft). Since most players play
with woods with too little loft, the tendency is to move them too far
forward in an effort to create more loft. However, the further forward
you move the ball, the more open your shoulder line becomes. Because
the club wants to swing in the direction of your shoulder line, you have
created a pre-swing alignment that will induce a swing path that will
cut across the intended target line giving you an erratic ball flight.
If you properly square your club at address rather than aiming your
body at the target line, I think you will have more success!

AND THE ANSWER IS...
In addition to non-winner Sam Snead, the following players have played
in 30 or more U.S.Opens: Ray Floyd, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Jack Nicklaus,
Arnold Palmer and Gene Sarazen. And all of them won at least once.

What is the difference between a four-ball match and a foursomes match?

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS
Due to the drought and the need for water conservation along with budget
restraints, our fairways will not be over-seeded this year. The good news
is that our fairway shots will probably go further on the dormant Bermuda,
if not straighter. The over-seeding of tees and greens will begin October 7.
That means temporary greens for at least a week or more. Pray for rain.

The annual High School Invitational will be held at CC on September 7.
Twenty-three teams will be competing for a host of trophies. Come out and
root for your favorite school or player.
