MARK YOUR CALENDARS
The President's Cup our first "major" of the year, will be held
on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7. Derry Snyder is the defending
champion. Look for more details on this tournament following the
Texas Scramble on April 9.
To be eligible for any of our "major" tournaments a player must
have, within the past 12 months, played in at least two official
CCMGA tournaments in which the scores were posted for handicap
purposes. RAZZ scores do not qualify as tournament scores.
The "rain delayed" Eclectic Tournament is now set for Saturday and
Sunday, June 10 and 11. You know the drill. Your Eclectic score will
be the total of the best score you make on each hole on either of
the tournament days. However, you must play out your own ball each
day as your scores for both days will be posted as "T" scores.
Thirty-six holes gross and net. Flighted by handicap. White tees
for all players. Look for entry forms following the President's Cup.
Match play is back by popular demand. Hosted by the Special Events
Committee, the tournament will kick off on May 20. Rounds will be
played over three months concluding with the championship round
which will be played between July 9 and 15. Allen Sadberry, Special
Events Committee Chairman, will have more details available in the
weeks ahead.
ANNUAL REFRESHER ON TOURNAMENT ELIGIBILITY
Handicaps for all tournament players are determined by the following
policy: "The lowest three of five scores in sanctioned CCMGA
home or away tournaments or your current AGA handicap in effect on
the closing date for tournament entries, whichever is lower, will
determine a member's handicap for tournament play."
(Note: Members playing in their first CCMGA tournament will receive
their AGA handicap. For members with one, but less than five,
tournament scores, the following formula will be used to determine
their lowest tournament score: one for one, two for two, two for
three and three for four.)
MEET THE NEW HEAD PRO
When the city opted to have all its courses managed by city employees,
staff changes were inevitable.
Winford "Buffy" Labombarde has been named the Lead Professional at
Cave Creek. He comes to us from Maryvale where he was a member of the
pro shop staff for 25 years including 20 years as the First Assistant
Professional. A native of Nashua, NH, Buffy also served as the head
professional at clubs in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
He said there will be continued emphasis on customer service, and
cooperation with all groups that play at the Creek. His message to
CCMGA was, "Come see me, the door will always be open."
Buffy, welcome to Cave Creek. We look forward to working with you
and your staff to achieve common goals.
Our congratulations to Mike Swartz who has been named Lead Professional
at Papago.
Mike, we will miss your counsel and availability when it was most needed.
MAINTAINENCE MOVES
Course Superintendent, Bob Lytle, has been "loaned" to Encanto. His
assignment is part of the Golf Division's plan to share the knowledge
and expertise needed to put all the city's courses in top shape as
quickly as possible.
Mark Derbes will be handling the superintendent's duties in his absence.
CCMGA welcomes the opportunity to work with Mark in selecting course
improvement projects that we may be able to help fund.
COURSE IMPROVEMENTS
Before he left, Bob reported that efforts to dry up course wet spots
are continuing. The tee box leveling project will tackle holes 10 and
18 later this year.
Responding to a question he had received from a member, he noted that
mowers are set for the same height for all fairways, and that none are
being scalped intentionally.
Special stone, course directional markers provided by CCMGA are
currently being put in place. Look for them holes 6, 11 and 18.
RAZZ RECORD
On March 23, the RAZZ tee sheet showed 123 players, a record number
we are told. We suspect it will be broken before year end
USGA CLARIFICATION ON DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICE POLICY.
…."a player may obtain distance information by using a device that
measures distance only. However, if during a stipulated round, a
player uses a distance measuring device that is designed to gauge
or measure other conditions that might affect his play(i.e. gradient,
wind-speed, temperature, etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3,
for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any
such additional functions are actually used."
As the Board of Governors noted when it approved the use of distance
measuring devices in our tournaments: "Self policing has always been
a hallmark of golf, and the Board expects CCMGA members to carry on
that tradition in complying with the USGA's definition of an approved
distance measuring device."
Can you share the yardage you measured with your approved measuring
device with your partner and fellow competitors? The USGA says "yes."
Golf's ruling body has determined that information regarding the
distance between two objects, regardless of how that information
is obtained, is public information, not advice. Whether you want
to share it with a competitor is up to you………
"PHOENIX CARDS" AVAILABLE
Members who purchased "Phoenix Cards" can pick them up in the Pro Shop.
With nearly 8000 already sold, the card is proving to be popular with
residents and nonresidents alike. The card offers discounted green fees,
preferred tee times and frequent player and Internet discounts. They
are available at any of the city's' courses for $30 if you have an old
Resident Card or $40 if you are a new cardholder.
NINETEENTH HOLE…
….Think you know the Rules of Golf? Last year, the USGA's annual Rules
Quiz was taken by 2,456 USGA members. Only 21 answered all 18 questions
correctly even though you can look up the answers in the Rules of Golf
and Decisions on the Rules of Golf.
AND FINALLY…..
"Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part.
It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a
fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a
brooding melancholy, a dream of yesterday, a disappointing today
and a hope for tomorrow." Grantland Rice
