were posted for handicap purposes. RAZZ scores do not qualify as tournament scores.
Note: Tournament dates for all Phoenix Municipal Courses are allotted by the Parks
and Recreation Department and are fixed. However, the 2008 Board of Governors has
the option to change the types of tournaments played, and the order in which they
are played. Any changes will be reported to the membership promptly.
ALL HAIL TO...
The weekly Razz Hole in One pot had increased to the amount of $5,500 before finally
being won by Tony Fellner. And then Dave Bray won it a week later in the amount of $116.
Dave Bray also scored a hole in one on Hole # 13 and then a Double Eagle on Hole
# 16 in our February Tournament. Dave used a 9 iron for the hole in one, and the
same nine iron for his second shot on the 16th for the Double Eagle.
OUTSTANDING! Our hats are off to you.
VARIETY MARKS OUR TOURNAMENTS
The March Tournament is a Stableford (points scoring), in April we have our 2 Day
Presidents Cup, and in May we have the ABCD 2 Best Balls of the Foursome tournament.
We always try to have a wide variety of formats for our members.
CCMGA TOURNAMENT HANDICAPS
Our Policy for handicaps used in tournaments is that we use either your USGA Handicap,
or your Tournament Handicap which is calculated using the best 3 of the last 5
Tournament Scores….whichever is lower. The Handicap used is the one that was current
on the Tournament Entry Deadline date
A GOOD INVESTMENT.
Today, seventy bucks might get you one round at a high end course, fill up your SUV
with gas, maybe buy three dozen golf balls.......OR renew your membership in CCMGA.
That's right, your board has voted to again hold the line on dues for the seventh
straight year. And all the benefits of membership still apply: You know what they
are but you might want to pass this item on to a potential new member: monthly
tournaments that appeal to all handicap levels. a summer "beat the heat" event,
the Thursday RAZZ to keep your game sharp and competitive, the opportunity to get
involved in Junior Golf or Board activities, membership in the Arizona Golf Association
which gives you a USGA handicap good anywhere you play, an annual banquet at no
additional cost and most important, the association with other members who, like you,
want to foster good fellowship while preserving the integrity of the game.
Renew your membership now!
Application forms are available in the CCMGA box in the pro shop or on online at www.ccmga.net
Applications will also be available at our Annual Meeting and Banquet on November 21st.
An important reminder - any member who has not renewed his membership by December
31st will be dropped from the rolls and will be unable to post scores in 2009 until his dues
are paid.
From September 1 to October 15, you can join CCMGA for the remainder of the year for
only $40.
After October 15 you can become a CCMGA member for the remainder of the year plus
a full year's membership in 2010 for only $85.
ANOTHER BANNER YEAR
CCMGA is a "players" club. It is not unusual to have more than 100 players in our
monthly tournaments. The same can be said for the Thursday RAZZ.
We've added more than 100 new members so far this year, a tribute to the recruiting
powers of our longtime members.
We appreciate the support you have given to Junior Golf, and your volunteer efforts
when needed.
FROM THE TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE:
The 2009 tournament season is in full swing with the January Gross/Net and the February
Two Man Aggregate tournaments already completed. Both tournaments had excellent
participation and pace of play was improved over previous years.
As a reminder to our members, please remember to:
Attach the minimum payment required for tournaments to your entry form. Beginning with
the March Stableford tournament, entry forms without the minimum payment attached
(see the entry form) will not be processed.
Get your entry in on time (usually the Sunday before the tournament). Late entries
(past the Sunday due date) will only be considered on a best efforts basis by the committee.
Review the CCMGA No Show policy posted in the cafe and Pro Shop to avoid losing tournament
fees and incurring penalties.
The Tournament Committee thanks all the members for a great start to the year and we’ll
see you at the March Stableford event!
FROM THE SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE:
The Match Play Tournament starts February 28 and has three flights of 16 players.
The schedule of matches, including each players telephone number, and rules are posted
on the website, bulletin board, and in the cafe. Please read the rules before beginning
your match.
Mark your calendars for the Prescott tournament scheduled for August 1st at the Prescott
Country Club. The format will be two man best ball.
MATCH PLAY DATES:
February 28 to March 14.......All brackets (16 entrants each)
March 15 to March 28..........Eight entrants from each bracket
March 29 to April 11..........Four entrants from each bracket
April 12 to April 25..........Final twosome from each bracket
SLOW PLAY CAN BE CURED IF YOU REALLY WANT IT TO BE
An in-depth study of slow play by the USGA concluded that "very few golfers hold up
play intentionally; they are just thoughtless or have never learned to play alertly."
The study also noted that "If every player would show the same courtesy to those
playing behind as is shown to his own group - everyone would benefit." Following
are the highlights of that study:
The chief cause of slow play is time lost on the putting green. As much as two minutes
can be saved on every green if:
1. You park your cart where someone does not have to walk back to get it.
2. On approaching the green, take any other club you may need with your putter.
If you have the wrong club, tell your playing partners they may play out of turn.
3. Once on the green, study the line of your putt immediately unless doing so interferes
with another player.
4. Never replay a missed putt; never mark your score while on the green; and leave
immediately when play is completed.
5. The player who has the honor on the next tee should go there immediately. Let someone
else bring the cart.
SLOW PLAY FROM TEE TO GREEN
1. Put head covers on while walking or riding to your next shot.
2. Take the cart directly to the ball that is "away." Once there, the other player should
take the clubs he thinks he will need and go to his ball.
3. Check your watch frequently so you can make the players with you aware of whether you
are playing too slowly.
The report concluded "that there is no single thing that can be done to speed up play.
Playing, without the annoyance of constant delay involves many little things. Some will
save minutes, others will save seconds. But when they are all added up, a half hour can
easily be taken off the time it usually takes to play a round of golf.
Unfortunately, if only one group plays without consideration, the time wasted creates delay
for all the players behind."
The bottom line is that you don’t have to rush your shots to play fast, you just need to be
thinking about how to save time on everything else involved in the game.
AND WE END WITH A FEW FAMOUS QUOTES:
"You can make a lot of money in this game. Just ask my ex-wives. Both of them are so rich
that neither of their husbands work."
Lee Trevino
"These greens are so fast I have to hold my putter over the ball and hit it with the shadow."
Sam Snead
"If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball"
Jack Lemmon
"The least thing upsets him on the links. He missed short putts because of the uproar of
butterflies in the adjoining meadows."
P.G. Wodehouse
"The first time I played the Masters, I was so nervous I drank a bottle of rum before I
teed off. I shot the happiest 83 of my life."
Chi Chi Rodriguez
